Beginner Tip
Focus on surviving and clearing Pac-Dots before chasing ghost combinations. Learning the maze is more important than risking lives for bonus points.
PAC-MAN
PAC-MAN is one of the most recognizable arcade games ever created. Guide the yellow hero through a neon maze, eat every Pac-Dot, avoid four pursuing ghosts, and survive long enough to reach increasingly difficult levels.
The rules are immediately understandable, but achieving a high score requires planning. Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde follow different targeting behaviors, making every route through the maze a balance between collecting pellets and preserving an escape path.
Large Power Pellets temporarily reverse the chase. When the ghosts turn blue, PAC-MAN can eat them for escalating bonus points before they recover and become dangerous again.

PAC-MAN is a maze-based arcade game originally developed and published by Namco. The game was planned by Toru Iwatani, programmed by Shigeo Funaki, and featured sound by Toshio Kai.
The original game was first tested on May 22, 1980, released commercially in Japan in July, and introduced in the United States in October of the same year. Bandai Namco now recognizes May 22 as PAC-MAN’s official birthday. Official PAC-MAN history
Your objective is to eat every regular pellet in the maze without being caught by a ghost. Once all Pac-Dots have been consumed, the game continues on another level with faster and more demanding enemy behavior.
The browser version on Lalo.games is delivered by FreePacMan.org. It recreates the original maze, characters, scoring, and arcade presentation but should not be confused with an official modern Bandai Namco release.
Use the directional controls to guide PAC-MAN through the maze. He continues moving until you choose another direction, reach a wall, or lose a life.
Eat every small Pac-Dot to complete the level. You do not need to eat bonus fruit or ghosts to advance, but these targets can significantly increase your score.
Avoid direct contact with Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde during their normal states. Touching an active ghost costs one life and resets PAC-MAN and the ghosts to their starting positions.
Eat one of the four large Power Pellets positioned near the maze corners to activate frightened mode. The ghosts turn blue and can temporarily be eaten for bonus points.
Use the side tunnels when you need an alternative route across the maze. Ghosts generally travel more slowly through these tunnels in the original arcade rules, making them useful escape paths.
Clear the final Pac-Dot to begin the next level. Later rounds increase the pressure by changing movement speeds and reducing how long ghosts remain vulnerable.
PAC-MAN is the player-controlled character. His objective is to consume every Pac-Dot while avoiding ghosts, collecting bonus items, and building the highest possible score.
Blinky is the red ghost and the most direct pursuer. He typically targets PAC-MAN’s current position and becomes increasingly aggressive as fewer pellets remain.
Pinky is the pink ghost. Instead of simply following PAC-MAN’s current tile, Pinky attempts to move toward a position ahead of his direction of travel.
Inky is the cyan ghost and has the most complicated targeting behavior. His target is calculated using PAC-MAN’s position and Blinky’s location, making his movement appear less predictable.
Clyde is the orange ghost. He alternates between approaching PAC-MAN and retreating toward his corner based on distance, producing an unusual stop-and-start pursuit pattern.
The ghosts also cycle between general chase and scatter phases. During scatter periods, they move toward separate maze corners rather than continuously targeting PAC-MAN.
The small pellets lining the maze are worth 10 points each. The original board contains 240 regular Pac-Dots.
Each of the four Power Pellets is worth 50 points. Consuming one reverses the ghosts’ direction and temporarily places them in a vulnerable state.
Eating vulnerable ghosts during one Power Pellet sequence awards escalating points:
Eating all four produces 3,000 points from the ghosts themselves during that sequence.
A bonus item appears beneath the ghost house twice during each level in the original arcade game. Its appearance and value change as you progress:
Collecting fruit is optional, so do not risk a life if several ghosts are blocking the path.
PAC-MAN uses the same core maze throughout the original arcade game, but its difficulty changes between levels. Ghost speeds, PAC-MAN’s movement, frightened-mode duration, and other timing values adjust as you progress.
Early levels provide longer Power Pellet effects, giving beginners more time to eat vulnerable ghosts. On later stages, the blue period becomes shorter and eventually provides little opportunity for a safe counterattack.
The original arcade program contains 255 normally playable levels. Level 256 triggers the famous split-screen or kill-screen bug, corrupting the right side of the maze with symbols and making the board impossible to complete normally.
The browser recreation may handle level progression differently, so the original level 256 behavior should not be guaranteed unless it has been tested in the FreePacMan.org version.
Do not automatically consume a Power Pellet when you reach it. Clear nearby regular pellets first and wait until multiple ghosts are close enough to make the power-up valuable.
Avoid entering long corridors when ghosts are approaching from both directions. Check intersections before committing to a path.
PAC-MAN accepts directional input slightly before some intersections. Enter the next direction early so he turns immediately when the path becomes available.
Blinky applies direct pressure and becomes more aggressive as the board empties. Track the red ghost whenever you move through an exposed section.
The tunnels connect the left and right sides of the maze. They can create distance when a ghost group closes in, particularly because ghost movement is affected inside them.
For a strong score, allow several ghosts to approach before eating a Power Pellet. Eating them consecutively produces far more points than catching only one.
Fruit remains visible for a limited period, but survival matters more. Collect it when the center route is reasonably safe.
The lower corners can become difficult once ghost speed increases. Clearing their pellets early can reduce risky trips later in the level.
PAC-MAN was created during an arcade era dominated by space shooters. Toru Iwatani wanted to design a colorful game with broader appeal, using eating as its central theme.
Namco introduced the game in Japan in 1980, while Midway distributed it in North America. Its simple rules, memorable characters, maze strategy, and distinctive sound design helped it become a worldwide cultural phenomenon.
The original coin-operated title later inspired sequels, console adaptations, animated shows, merchandise, music, and many browser versions. Bandai Namco describes PAC-MAN as one of the most influential and longest-running video game franchises. Bandai Namco’s 45th-anniversary history
Google also created a separate playable PAC-MAN Doodle for the game’s 30th anniversary in May 2010. That version uses a Google-shaped maze and should not be confused with the classic browser recreation available on this page.
Focus on surviving and clearing Pac-Dots before chasing ghost combinations. Learning the maze is more important than risking lives for bonus points.
Leave a few pellets near a Power Pellet until multiple ghosts approach. Trigger frightened mode, eat the grouped ghosts, and then finish clearing that area.
Do not assume the ghosts move randomly. Each ghost uses a different targeting method, and ignoring their positions can quickly trap PAC-MAN between two corridors.
Use intersections to change direction frequently when Blinky is close. PAC-MAN can make sharp turns, while the ghost must follow the maze route before correcting its pursuit.
PAC-MAN’s brilliance comes from turning a simple maze into a readable system of threats and opportunities. High-level play is not about moving constantly—it is about understanding when a route will remain safe several seconds later.

The ghosts are Blinky, the red ghost; Pinky, the pink ghost; Inky, the cyan ghost; and Clyde, the orange ghost.
Eating a Power Pellet temporarily turns the ghosts blue and vulnerable. PAC-MAN can then eat them for 200, 400, 800, and 1,600 points in sequence.
Fruit and other bonus symbols appear near the center of the maze and award extra points. Their value increases as you reach later levels.
The original arcade program has 255 normally playable levels. Level 256 produces the famous split-screen bug that prevents normal completion.
The accepted perfect score in the original arcade game is 3,333,360 points. It requires collecting every possible pellet, fruit, and vulnerable ghost before exhausting the available lives on level 256.
No. This page uses a FreePacMan.org recreation of the original arcade game. Google’s 2010 Doodle is a separate version featuring a Google-shaped maze and an optional two-player mode.
The game runs in a compatible browser without installation. However, availability depends on the restrictions applied by your school, workplace, or network administrator.
