Sudoku is a single-player number-placement puzzle played on a square grid. The classic version contains 81 cells divided into nine rows, nine columns, and nine smaller 3×3 boxes.
Some numbers are already placed at the beginning. These fixed numbers are called givens or clues and cannot be changed. Your task is to determine the correct value for every remaining cell.
Each row must contain the digits 1 through 9 without repetition. The same rule applies to every column and 3×3 box. A completed grid is only correct when all three conditions are satisfied simultaneously.

An X-Wing occurs when one candidate appears in exactly two matching positions across two rows or columns. This rectangular pattern allows the candidate to be eliminated elsewhere in the connected lines.
Swordfish extends the X-Wing principle across three rows and three columns. It is less common but useful in particularly difficult grids.
An XY-Wing uses three connected cells containing related candidate pairs. Their relationship allows a shared candidate to be removed from cells that can see both wing cells.
These techniques are unnecessary for most beginner puzzles. Learn singles, pairs, and locked candidates before attempting complex patterns.
